==============================

From Mike Tomaro comes this great chart inspired by one of the greatest fusion jazz groups of all time, The Yellowjackets. Growing up, The Yellowjackets and Chick Corea's Elektric and Akoustic bands were my introduction to jazz, and the drumming of both Dave Weckl and Will Kennedy (and later, Peter Erskine and Marcus Baylor) kept me in the practice room on a pretty constant basis. :D

As a rhythm section, we took some liberties with the grooves that we played - including spontaneously going into a reggae groove at one point!

I also want to apologize for both the quality and angle of the video. My camera was set up on the percussionist's riser and I think somehow my camera went into widescreen mode, cutting off the top of my head and making the size of the video quite strange. Oh well...these things happen. ;)

There are a lot of uneven figures and "over the barline" melodies in this chart, which made it a real blast to play. I hope you enjoy it. If you do, drop me a line below, or head on over to derekmunson.com to see more!

  • Ummm...it's called "Continuum", just like the title of the video says, lol. ;)

  • No problem. :)

  • had the opportunity to play this with mike tomaro. really fun chart

  • Right on! This was one of my favorite charts I've played in years. Mike is a really talented writer; I loved the challenge that this chart gave the whole band. Very cool piece. :)

  • Thanks for the comment! I can't say I have any more that are similar to this one - it's a "one of a kind" piece of music, which is why I loved playing it so much! As far as your iPod, consider doing what I do: when I want to know what's hip and current, I flip on the radio. Other than that, pretty much everything else goes on my iPod - stuff you can't find on the radio typically, like jazz, latin, big band, fusion, world beat, funk...you know, stuff that "the masses" would have a fit about. :)

  • I can't stop listening to this, for this to be concert yet sound crisp like studio is amazing! I love this song in particular and the way it was executed by you all, have anymore with similar sound to this one? My ipod is full of the stuff they play on the radio rather than real music like this!

  • @drumology2001 again thank you so much :) ill try to see if we could get a recording of the piece so you can hear how it sounds

  • Right on! That's awesome to hear. I'm actually kind of jealous of you guys: I absolutely LOVED playing this piece, and wish I was able to do it again! Maybe again sometime in the next few years. :)
