In the past few years, Afghanistan has seen vast growth in its economy. Many indicators, such as GDP and poverty, have been getting rapidly better. However, according to Stephanie Sanok, an expert on the Afghan economy, this rapid growth stems from the US strategy to encourage the Afghan manufacturing sector. In fact, according to CSIS expert Anthony Cordesman, most of this growth has been spurred by foreign, not Afghan money. Now that President Obama has announced the beginning of the draw down of US troops, many experts say the loss of revenue Afghanistan derived from the US military could have a devastating effect on the economy.
