The reason that one sensor on either side of the line works so well is because it doesn't need to zigzag. The only down side is that it doesn't know what to do when both sensors see black. In some programs if both sensors see black it'll go in reverse.

the optimization between forward speed versus the reaction time of the sensors tuned to the actual steepness of the lines in the course determine the winning combination.
