I disagree with pirate0319. The song is better on _Blonde on Blonde_--more understated, respectful of its lyrics, and less show-offy. This is a not a rouser but a playful, brooding bit of confusion; its virtue is that it hasn't got it figured out--which is why the choruses end with a question.
