Sound Affects is Christian Patterson's book of color photographs of Memphis, Tennessee, the "Birthplace of Rock 'n Roll" and the "Home of the Blues."
Music forms the conceptual leitmotif of this work. The title is a pun alluding to "sound effects" -- artificially reproduced sounds -- as well as to an affective excitement caused by music.
Some of the subject matter is musical -- jukeboxes, records, recording equipment, studios and music clubs. But on a formal level, Sound Affects builds a visual analogy to music, as color and light often portrays musical behaviors or ideas.
In Patterson's own words, "These photographs are light-borne visual melodies -- musical arrangements of color, light, rhythm and form exploring musical places, music's presence, and the musicality of everyday life."
