October is National Bullying Prevention Month. I'm 22 right now, and as recently as two years ago, I experienced bullying, but I'm going to be realistic. Humans, regardless of age, can be really mean and hurtful to others. We see examples of cyber bullying affecting many grown-ups negatively. For example, we've seen the negative effects of mean and hurtful comments on kpop stars.

No one is immune to bullying after a certain age. It's just that as we grow up and mature, we learn to control our actions and also learn to buffer the effects of bullying on ourselves.

The most painful consequences of bullying, I think, is its effects on young children. It's during childhood where we develop dreams, morals, and outlooks on life. By being a bully, kids don't learn to deal with their personal issues in a productive way, and instead resort to pushing down others to keep their heads held high. And from being bullied, kids shy away from reaching their full potential and are scared everyday.

When the kids, being so young and having futures where anything is possible, end up being depressed, harming themselves physically and even take their lives by suicide, it really makes me upset. Being bullied isn't some rare incident. I think everyone has some instances where they were bullied.

I came to US when I was 10. I took a little bit of English before I came, but I was no where near being fluent. I remember being ignored by classmates in my 3rd/4th grade classes, and the teachers also weren't that accommodating and treated me like I was a burden. Kids would make fun of my accent, mock how I couldn't speak English well. They'd say "girl, I can't even understand anything you say because yo voice so ugly and yo accent so bad." I was too embarrassed to tell my parents because I thought that it'd upset them. Looking back, and reading stories of other children who are being bullied, I know it feels like you can't escape and life is just to horrible to live out.

I don't really have suggestions for combating bullying... it's really tough, and there is no one solution that works for each case... but the reason I made this video is to give those of you who are being bullied some encouragement. You are not alone, and even if it feels crappy right now, it is not the end.

Even though those little kids made fun of my accent and English, in less than a year, I took a standardized exam for my state about US History, just like those other little kids, and I passed it above average while most of the kids that mocked me did worse. Those kids still made fun of me through 6th grade, but I graduated at the top of my class, went on to a top ranked high school in the nation, went to an Ivy league, and now am attending law school. Seriously? Bitch you ain't got shit on me.

You shouldn't retaliate against bullies by using the same methods that they use: Mockery, emotional and physical abuse... Instead you should be confident, and show them that regardless of all their meanness, you are capable of succeeding. You ARE capable. It's hard to be confident when so many ppl are trying to put you down, but you have to be confident. I was called ugly, and I felt ugly, but for years before going to school or whenever I was in a restroom, I told myself that I am pretty. I am worthy. And I am great.

Anywho.... I hope this English version of the uplifting song, HIMNAE, can make someone smile and feel hopeful. =)
