... strengthen a wood frame structure. Advanced framing looks like the best approach for efficiency but not entirely sure for high wind loads. I was also curious about what your career description is. Building science is very interesting to me and am thinking about doing the same thing when I leave the service. Wish all the best, Jason.

Jason, Thanks for commenting. You'll need to talk to an Engineer to verify any framing plan when you're in a high risk area. My guess is that Advanced Framing with Closed Cell foam would be more structurally sound than standard framing with batt insulation. I don't build anything that's not stout! Best, Matt

Regarding my background, I have a degree in Industrial Management and got my start at 22 with a National Builder. I fell into Building Science because of failures encountered during the mold crisis of 2001-02. That mold scare lead me to question the "that's how we've always done it" mentality. I attended an EEBA training day called "Houses that Work" taught by Mark LaLiberte and my eyes were opened to the world of Building Science. I wish you great success in your endeavors! Best, Matt

Thanks Matt! I've been following your videos for about a year now, they're all great! I've learned alot in the past year between books and the internet and have become quite a building nerd myself. My current trade skill is electrical that i've aquired from the military and college. I plan to expand my knowledge and eventually become a builder or contractor and try to follow the same way you build. Keep up the good work and looking forward to more vids. Jason

Jason, That's really cool buddy. This country needs more guys who are studied in building science and have the courage to do the right thing. Sounds to me like you've got a bright future in front of you. Best, Matt

Thanks Matt. This will be helpful to share with a school board I'm hoping to sell on the benefits of Advanced Framing.

Do you find that this method is more, less, or same in cost and time (considering 5/8" drywall, LVL headers, etc)?

The cost question is tough to answer. There is definite material savings, and certainly insulation gains which should cut utility costs. I think the labor cost savings are small. Sorry to be vague, but there are more benefits to this method than just cost so you'll need to figure this one for yourself & your trade base. Best, Matt

Is advanced framing practical (structurally) for high wind coastal regions? Specifically in southern Louisiana around 20 miles north of the coast line where it'll face many hurricanes. I plan on building and have been doing a lot of homework on different types of construction methods and ICF's and SIP's are pretty much out of the question now due to cost, lack of experienced builders and just overall practicality. I'm really sold on what closed cell spray foam can do to insulate, seal and ....

I agree, just wanted to share a real-world experience with the board. :) All the best, Tim

Do you worry about compressing the insulation or do you only do spray foam?
