Maybe Schoenberg was right when he said that Brahms' harmony is more modern and complex than Wagner's.... in the whole piece ther's just one beat with a clear A minor!

This is not a young Brahms anymore, and Lupu feels it. Nice performance.

Most elegant, flowing playing of Intermezzo 118-1 of Brahms I'd ever listened...
Thank you very much for your post.
BTW, as I am a Japanese and live in the suburb of Tokyo, I feel quite sorry Mr Lupu had to cancel all recitals planned in Japan in this Autumn. According to the sponsor's announcement, he'd got outa condition in Japan and had to go back home. (I am anxious about his recent physical conditions.)

(cont.) Just as an aside, since I noticed you also just posted some Ashkenazy, I heard him (also at the DC Pav.) play the Scriabin Concerto with Mehta/LA Phil, ca. 1975.
Beautiful performance.
Very lovely. Lupu is one of the greatest pianists of the day. But, as I imagine you know, he is even greater in "live" performance.
I have his studio recording of the Brahms D-minor Concerto, and it's a fine performance.
However, I also have a tape of his "live" performance of the same Concerto with Previn/LA Phil, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion. (Perhaps you were there?) It's immeasurably greater than the studio version.
Incredible fire and freedom of expression!! (cont.)

I have only had the opportunity of hearing Lupu and Ashkenazy in solo recitals. I am looking forward to hearing Emanuel Ax all Chopin Disney Hall recital in March. Thank you for your comments.
