An audio-only montage of clips from Nottingham's pioneering unlicensed broadcaster, Globe FM.
As one of its four founders, I was involved from inception in October 1991, maintaining an often stormy relationship with the station until late 1993. I was only 17 when test transmissions commenced, so those two years felt like a lifetime. Globe FM changed frequencies numerous times, saw several complete turn-overs of personnel and was raided relentlessly, ultimately resulting in the station's demise and a suspended sentence for its, by then, sole manager and owner.
However, the station nurtured its talent and gave birth to countless careers, with ex-Globe alumni now working for the BBC, the four major commercial radio groups and across all media; some remain plying their trade in night-clubs, internationally. The clips included here represent all I have left and are very poor quality, rescued from battered cassette tapes, and are presented randomly. The earliest audio is from late 1991; the latest recording is from my last show for the station in 1993.
Globe FM never saw itself as a pirate and strived for quality. Some fifteen years on, I think it's fair to say, the clips you'll hear demonstrate that Globe FM was certainly "of its time".

What a great station Globe was!
Sadly even though I was with Steve, Phil, Keith and 'Darryl' on a previous radio project in Nottingham (Centre 238) I was never actively involved in Globe other than contributing occassional movie and concert reviews on the drivetime show.
It's to my eternal regret that I didn't push myself forward for a show but I wasn't very confident in my 'on-air' abilities back then despite the fact that I now broadcast for a living so clearly could have done it! :s
