Actually, the Fountain of Dreams was just on the other side of that pool. They just wanted Kirby to take care of the riff raff for them.

I wish I could go to the credits without having to reset the game, but it just doesn't work... I don't know exactly why the glitch behaves that way, but maybe someone can improve the run someday.
