He was born in Prague and his name before he changed it was Herbert Karel Angelo Kuchačevič ze Schluderpacheru.

Herbert Lom was a really terrific actor, whom I first encountered in Ray Harryhausen's version of MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, as Captain Nemo. He ran in neck and neck with James Mason in Disney's 20,000 LEAGUES ... Lom was exceptional in Hammer's PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, as well as in so many roles, including SPARTACUS & EL CID. Of course, he demonstrated that he was fearless in A SHOT IN THE DARK! How many actors today will be able to have careers that last 60 years?!!!
