4 axis computer controlled ornamental milling attachment for a woodturning lathe shown cutting a barley twist column in walnut. The entire machine is fabricated from scratch in my shop.

  • Awesome work! That looks like a *really* versatile machine! How fast can it rotate the lathe spindle?

  • The spindle motor of this machine uses a 5.5 kW servomotor with a maximum rpm of 1500 but I can only get about 800 rpm out of it under the constraints of the computer and drive software.

  • Thanks Benny! It has taken about 3 years to get the servo motors figured out since they were salvaged. Sure feels good to finally see the machine work. Since it is my own design, I was very concerned that it would be rigid enough and able to move fast enough without stalling the stepper motors. The barley twists are my favorite embellishment for furniture making. Thanks for the comment!
