QUESTIONER: I just want to get you on the record because I think you had mentioned it in the past but I'm not sure if you support the elimination of mountaintop removal mining . . . that's an ecological disaster, it can be done in more environmentally friendly ways so that it will keep the economy stable in the area . . . by still extracting the coal. So, do you support eliminating mountaintop removal mining . . . ?
JOHN MCCAIN: You know, I do and I'm happy to tell you that I've seen a dramatic improvement in the behavior of the coal companies. They are doing a much better job. Now, it's not perfect but it certainly is dramatically improved from what it was some years ago. As you also know, there's a payment that the coal companies make for every ton of coal they take out and that money is given back to the community . . . that's an important area of economic development in some of the lowest income parts of America. But I also want to get back to this clean coal technology for a second, my friends, she is right, we are sitting on the world's largest reserves of coal and we're going to build new plants the generate energy my friends . . . there's an increased demand for it. And it seems to me, it's going to be coal, which I believe will increase greenhouse gas emissions dramatically or it's going to be nuclear or it's going to be clean coal technology. I'm not free with your tax dollars but I want to invest money, $2 billion a year, in development of clean coal technology. We should be able to do it. You know, you get so tired of hearing people say, you can't do nuclear, you can't do clean coal technology, you can't do this, you can't develop solar, we can, we can. We can do it. [applause] And so, I put . . . this emphasis on clean coal techonology because were going to have to use coal. We dont have any choice because were going to, theres going to be a demand for energy my friends, theres going to be a demand for it, were going to have to expand our electric grid, were going to have to do all of those things as see the growing demands for energy and coal has got to be part of it if were going to achieve the independence from foreign oil . . . by the way, Im sure you noticed, in the last week or so, OPEC has announced that theyre going to reduce the worlds oil supply. Why? So they can squeeze more out of us. Now, now, if theres ever an argument, if theres ever an argument for us to become energy independent, they just articulated it again. And I wont go into and bother you with what I think the Russians are doing because its very clear that they are using oil and natural gas as a weapon . . . I take back the word weapon, as a means of influencing other nations. And they, and one of the things that happened in Georgia, as you know, besides their aggression there is the fact that theres an oil pipeline that goes through Georgia, into Turkey, from Azerbaijan that . . . is the only pipeline, essentially, that is not controlled by Russia. So, it, this is a big deal . . . weve got to develop alternate energy but clean coal has to be one of them.

A mountain cant be replaced by a paycheck, and clean coal is the most retarded oxymoron EVER concocted- theres radionuclides in the coal. Burn that and you breath radioactive stuff.

Obama is winning with the support of the people of the whole world. It's going to be a humiliating landslide against republicunts. McCain was never really in the race; he's a pathetic republicunt figure of REJECTION.

Ok, so he said briefly that he opposes MTR, but then focuses on "clean coal," which is a myth. There is no such thing, why spend 2 billion a year on that development when it could be going into green energy technoligies such as wind power?

John McCain supports an end to mountaintop removal coal mining, good for him.
Where does Sen. Obama stand on this issue? Why hasn't Sen. Obama come out against mountaintop removal, it is an atrocity and a crime against humanity.
