what kind of substrate is that? just mineral mud? and is that saltwater?

sumps are mainly for biological filtration and to put all the equipment into(protein skimmer, uv serilizer, calcium reactors etc etc) and a refugium is a place free from predators where beneficial organisms can reproduce, which is extremely benificial for the system, if you combine the both, then that is probably the most efficeint cost effect way of a reallly good filter

do you think its a silly idea to have a refugium in a tank that already has a sump at the back (namely river reef 94l/25g)? Because apparently, they are the most cost effective form of filtration
