Mary Jane Lamond was born on November 5th 1960 in Kingston, Ontario (Canada) but later moved to Nova Scotia where her family came from and developed an interest for the fading Scottish Gaelic language. She graduated from St Francis Xavier University in Celtic studies, wishing to contribute to the preservation of Gaelic and teach. But being gifted with a remarkable voice and sense of musical harmony, a local record company noticed her at a milling frolic and an unexpected singing career opened up for her. Lamond sings exclusively in Scottish Gaelic and arranges traditional a cappella songs with modern instrumentation. She is also working on the grassroots level to raise awareness and teach the language to a younger generation.
This diaporama illustrates Lamond's work through the years, the earliest photographs dating back to 1994. The song playing is "She's a rare one," a collaboration between Lamond and Cape Breton fiddler Ashley MacIsaac from his 2011 recording "Crossover" on the So Plaid label.
