Two 1884 James Watt & Co. beam engines still get up steam on special open days, at the Nottinghamshire water pumping station at Papplewick, that was still in full use as recently as 1969. For a working building not intended to be seen by the public, the ornate carved pillars and stained glass windows are an incredible testament to Victorian extravgance - and also stunning to look at.
