Horlicks was NZ bred but won a Japan Cup.
Brew, superbly bred being by Sir Tristram out of a Japan Cup winning mare was always bred to win a cup. Funny thing is, he was nothing more than battler for the majority of his career and only sprung to prominence in that spring of 2000 as a six year old. He only raced one more time before breaking down.

Yeah I backed Brew!! 16 or 20 to 1 I think!
Only picked it because it was bottom weighted. Picked Shocking last year too! EWvery other Melbourne Cup I've seen has been a disapointment.

My fav ol yippyio ran the race of his life.

Brew was bred to be anything being by super staying sire Sir Tristram (Zabeels father) out of Horlicks, a regally bred NZ mare that won a Japan Cup!! For the majority of his career he was a disappointment, just plodding around in open handicaps. Then one day it all just clicked.

That was my cousin that won it in 2000 ... GO KERRIN !

Best moment ever! I still remember this one. What a little champ of a horse!!

I kinda agree, but I don't believe that Australian bred stayers are dying out. Though, admittedly, none have won the race since Brew (Ethereal was a Kiwi, Media Puzzle Irish, Makybe Diva British bred and Delta Blues Japanese). It will be interesting to see what happens in 2007. I will agree with you if an Australian bred horse does not win the race.
