Jill Evans MEP & Cymdeithas Yr Iaith, June 7th 2011 Strasbourg

Plaid MEP Jill Evans and members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith have met European Commissioner for Culture, Androula Vassiliou, to discuss the future of S4C. The five strong delegation accompanied by Jill Evans met the Commissioner in Strasbourg. Mrs Vassiliou is the European Commissioner whose portfolio includes languages.

The meeting was an opportunity to brief the European Commission on the threat to S4C's future posed by the ninety-four per cent cut to the channel's funding, and to highlight the UK Government's obligations to Welsh language broadcasting under the European Charter on Minority Languages.

Jill Evans has refused to pay her TV licence fee in protest at the cuts to S4C and is being taken to court by the licensing authority. Mrs Vassiliou expressed her interest in the campaign.
