Cambodia faces many challenges when it comes to water and sanitation. Two thirds of its population have no access to clean drinking water and almost 85% of the people in its rural areas have no access to adequate sanitation. Open defecation is a common practice created both from lack of choice and ignorance of sanitation and hygiene issues. The consequences are however too dire to ignore an estimated 74% of all deaths in Cambodia are due to waterborne diseases.
