They arent anymore a tool than a soldier is. Labs arent agressive, arent trained to be, theyre trained to find bombs. Lucy is a sweet dog and she loves her handler more than anything.

It depends.

If they arent agressive, they are adopted out. Whoever their last handler was is given the first choice and they often adopt the dog.

There is NOTHING safe about what my husband does. How dare you say the only safe one is the handler? DO you have any damn clue how many handlers have died & had their limbs blown off over there? No, you dont. I do. Ive seen my husband go to their funerals. It is an extremely dangerous job & my husband is over there right now. They walk in the front looking for bombs at the end of a small leash, if the dog goes, the handler goes. This is a training exercise, you have no idea what my husband does.

@Zergling29 Really? Because marines faught the Japanese in ww2 not the Germans and military dogs were used more in the pacific than the Normandy campaign.

looks like the handler is the only safe one when they go on patrol! He's walking behind the rest of the soldiers AND his dog! Thought the idea was that he was at the front!!!

@beautifulInner Attack dogs have saved the lives of thousands of soldiers over the U.S. military history.
There was a German Shepherd in World War 2 that single-handedly killed 23 Germans inside a fortified bunker on the Normandy beaches. That bunker alone had killed around 40 or so Marines before the hound cleared it out.
The dogs are treated very well and cared for, they eat better than the soldiers themselves and are bathed more too, ironically. Trust me, those dogs love their lives.

@Silvers1188 - I graduated from the MWD Handler Course a few weeks ago. Im an Army MP but my class was mixed with all the different branches. As of right now the Army MP corp is over strengthed so, it would be hard to get it now. The Marines is even harder to get MP, and if you get K9 school you only get one shot. If you fail youre out of luck. You can also go Air Force Security forces or Navy MP and get K9. check out my video; K9 - MWD Handler Course - Team 7

@Silvers1188 this might be a little late but i would say if you want to go dog handler go Marines. its the only branch you can test for dog handler in MP school. also the Marine Corps has a lot more pride and it's a lot more challenging
