Earthwatch works with disadvantaged young people who would not normally have the chance to participate in experiential learning opportunities like those offered on Earthwatch projects. The programme offers participants the opportunity to gain confidence and develop life skills via participation on specially tailored field research projects and a work experience placement at Earthwatchs office in Oxford. This experience benefits participants by instilling a lifelong interest in environmental conservation , building links with their local community and helping them access better employment opportunities.
In late July 2008, 5 students from the Oxford and Cherwell Valley College participated on the programme and joined the Earthwatch project Wildlife Enhancement on a Working Farm, where they helped Earthwatch scientist collect data about the decline in bumblebee numbers throughout the UK. They also underwent work experience in the Earthwatch offices in Oxford.
