I was barely 5 or 6 years old and I knew this man was great. Nothing was more fun than watching Gunsmoke on TV Mondays (I think) since to do so meant staying up an hour later beyond the regular bedtime. Loved that show and God bless Jim.

Matt Dillon was my role model growing up. There was no other western character on tv that compared to him.

@flipwiggins - Same here: I just found out about Mr. Arness' death almost three weeks after it happened. I loved watching Gunsmoke and watching JA as Matt Dillon. A compassionate tower of strength who I always enjoyed watching. And the Gunsmoke theme was my lullaby on Saturday nights as a boy. RIP.

James Arness was not only a hero on TV, but in real life as well.
He really was a giant of a man.
Arness is best remembered for Gunsmoke.
However, those who knew him will always remember him for his kind heart.
He spoke of his family, friends and fans at the end of his life.
He cared about everyone.
The next time I'm in Dodge, I will have tears in my eyes because the man who helped make the city even more famous, has left town.
