This is my second attempt at building a DoF adapter for my Sony HVR-A1P, and the results are FAR better! The unit is much more compact, and uses a vibrating Canon E-aa focusing screen to capture the image. It also has a Canon EOS mount (in fact, the construction is made of low-cost Canon EOS macro extension tubes.

The music, as always, was created using Magix Music Maker - see http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-2926431-10471109.

  • Hey EonPeon,

    Great vid!

Considering making one myself. Just watched this after checking out your last diy adaptor. Just wondering how loud the pancake motor is, and also, in comparison to your last build does this one handle lower light levels better or worse? Thanks again for sharing!

  • Hi jbob,

The pancake motor isn't loud at all. I built a potentiometer into a battery holder that takes two AA batteries (the motor only requires one AA to run) so i can adjust the voltage and hence the speed. Basically, I just set the speed until any dust /grain in the viewfinder disappears. Since this uses a Canon Ee-A focusing screen (and not a spinning plastic CD), the unit is far more compact, and works better in lower light, but you DO need to properly light your subject.

  • Great video!

I am thinking of buying a Sony HVR-A1E and will use it for webproduction.

Some forums says the camera has problems with low light shots, autofocus and the external mic.

    What is your opinion?

Would greatly appreciate a fast responce.

  • Thanks!

Hey, did I reply to you already..?

The A1 is a great little camera and I'm sure won't disappoint you. Yes, the low light performance is not the best, so just add more light!

Avoid shooting with the gain at full - you WILL introduce extra noise into the picture. Keep it always at least two or three steps awat from the far right of the exposure bar on the screen and you'll be fine. Autofocus is ok, but you should always focus manually anyway!
