I read through some of the depositions provided by Ms. Sheldon. This it is pretty stunning what happened in Westerly to Mr. Mauti.
Apparently it is highly unusual for a Police Captain to be making routine traffic stops. Yet Westerly Police Captain Matarese "coincidentally" pulled over Mr. Mauti one day after an unidentified police officer in Westerly broke the rules and looked up his record on a national database without cause. The guessing is Capt. Matarese was the one to use the database.

I think I read using the database like this is a crime? Based on the depositions, the Westerly Police Department is playing dumb over who used the computer database illicitly.

To add fuel to the fire, several Westerly officers testified in the depositions that the general assumption among Westerly Police Department was that Chief Scuncio had asked Capt. Matarese for a favor and that is why Mr. Mauti was arrested for a traffic violation that was iffy at best. The charge was eventually dismissed by a judge if I understand correctly.

I'd like to believe none of this is true, but when even Westerly police can't believe there was no collusion, why would anybody else believe it?

I know that there is something odd in Hopkinton when anyone publically questioning town officials ends up with legal problems. For those who criticize anonymity, it's easy to identify yourself when you go along with the power structure. Has any politician challenged the power in town and survived with their reputation intact? I doubt it.

I'm with you Tired...reading the depositions and the incidences leading up to Mr. Mauti's arrest and firing is sickening. This is what a facist state looks like. This is why every single citizen should be afraid of government. We should be doing every thing in our power to reduce government...power corrupts, and power seems to be addictive to Hopkinton's leaders.
I too am disappointed by past and current politicians in Hopkinton. I realize all to well what it is like to be afraid of the police, but hearing the complete story of Mr. Mauti's saga for the first time it is sad to recognize that our political leaders may have been complicit in the frightening civil right violations described in these documents.

Here's a report from ProJo on the suspension of Mr. Mauti. Of particular note was Mr. DiLibero's involvement. As indicated by the lawsuit, the maltreatment of Mr. Mauti was not limited to the police department.

I'm guessing the finance director is named in his official capacity because he went along with Mr. DiLibero in citing Mr. Mauti for a time card mistake which normally would have been fixed with no discipline forthcoming. I imagine under oath the Finance Director would concede that petty time card errors are always rectified with no suspension except this time when Mr. Mauti was being harassed by Hopkinton town officials

Hm Editor : Angie Algier was gone for 3 wks her first story upon her return was yes rallying to her old pal: Police Chief Scuncio . Years ago both of them were writing a book on a local murder ,it never came forward,no murderer ever found,no conviction! Now another author has written a book about Scuncio and McDonald uncovering another murder case. But remember Angie brought story forward. Did she help with this book too while away those three wks. ??

angie algier editor says she made a harassment complaint out with police , whereas horrible remarks were made against her. Stating their pulling all ip add: from Hopkinton blog & her own talkback column. I asked if she posted comments about herself in paper she said never. But horrible comments against others have been posted at her hand Hm I pointed out many will say she has attacked them. The police related it's civil but they'll keep looking & she talking to a Providence atty. Will backfire!
