My 1st attempt at using a Record Cleaning Machine (RCM). This is the ever so popular VPI 16.5 RCM made in the USA. Although I used a one step cleaning fluid, I will try some deionized water for rinse next time.

  • I believe it is the best value for a semi-automated RCM. There are lower end solutions that I didn't care for, some with manual record rotation. And I could not justify spending a couple grand for a fully automated RCM that I wouldn't use that often.

  • This particular model has been around for decades with minor improvements along the way. They typically sell for about $450 - $550 USD new, depending on the accessories bundled (brushes, cleaning fluids, etc).

  • this thing will scare the crap out of every cat in the house. 747 is quieter. lol

  • I have a VPI HW-17F ($1,000 in 2008). It has all functions of the Typhoon including the black brush/applicator arm not featured on the 16.5, plus an integral dust cover, but is probably not quite as heavy-duty. The Typhoon cleans the same as the 17F, but at over twice the cost. I've cleaned & treated over two dozen LP's back-to-back with no overheating or other problems, which seems more than adequate for this home user. The 17F is my pick of the three; good value at its price point.

  • this is a good starter model , that most people can get by on, but they make a top of the line model The VPI HW-27 Typhoon that runs around $ 2300 , but this is a very good model , the more expensive model is fully automatic, made more for someone who runs a record store or has like a 1000 record collection. great post

  • Hello, how much did you pay for that little fancy machine????
