The AFRTS detachment on the Rota Naval Station Base gets a satellite dish. Probably circa 1986.

  • Yep 1986. Remember we were not live when Challenger was destroyed. JO2 Smith was lead anchor at 6:15pm LOCAL time. Both rip and reads went APE with bells. She had a part of a local vid story to read the cold copy, about 2 minutes. Then ON AIR LIVE. She COUGHED ONCE through out the rest of the newscast. 6:30pm, we go to Com./Cal. (I think) we all lost it, tears everywhere. NO Video for three days from, what, SIG?. on blue 1/2" beta tapes. I remember because that was my FIRST day working the NEWS.
