This version of perhaps Gilbert`s most famous song was released in Japan in 1992 to mark the 20th Anniversary of the original recordings release in 1972 . This song is consistently used in Movie Soundtracks such as `The Virgin Suicides`, ` Stuart Little 2 `, ` Ice Age 3 ` and recently in ` Megamind `. This was called the `Present version ` for two reasons - meaning ` Now ` and also ` present ` as in a `gift ` to his fans . It`s a much simpler keyboard version without the guitar solo , but the lyrics remain as poignant and heartbreaking as ever -

ALONE AGAIN ( Naturally ) - Lyrics -
In a little while from now,
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promised myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower,
And climbing to the top,
Will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it's like when your shattered
Left standing in the lurch, at a church
Where people 're saying,
"My God that's tough, she stood him up!
No point in us remaining.
May as well go home."
As I did on my own,
Alone again, naturally

To think that only yesterday,
I was cheerful, bright and gay,
Looking forward to, well who wouldn't do,
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down,
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch,
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt,
All about God and His mercy
For if He really does exist
Why did He desert me
In my hour of need
I truly am indeed,
Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that
There are more hearts
Broken in the world
That can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?

(instrumental break)

Now looking back over the years,
And what ever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old,
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn't understand, why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart
So badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally

  • A cover.

  • @ChocolatecakeMac Yes - by Gilbert of his own song . If you don`t understand I`m sure a block of wood could explain it to you .

  • Wow, heard this when I was young and into the real heavy metal music sound and thought this was simply a trite little pop tune, just a little fluff. Boy how blind we can be sometimes. .Fantastic.

  • @oldgeezerman1 Very true . See the video response here to see how Gilbert came to write the song .

  • @mohawk3881 Thanks mohawk3881, and I truly mean it. Would like to thank you once again for your time and work in showing your devotion to this wonderful talented young man. Yep he is still young in heart I bet. (lol) I checked your account seeking the info you mentionedin regards to how he came to write this wonderful song, but in all honestly, i didn't see it. But I'll dig a little more as I plan on spending more time in your collection. Thanks again mohawk3881, this song moves me.

  • @oldgeezerman1 Thanks again - the video is right here - the video response above ! Thanks for the kind words .

  • @posilipos One of us is STUPID buddy - and it ain`t me ! This is Gilbert doing a new recording of an old song . IIf you don`t get it - ask a monkey to explain it to you .

  • @MekemeMekeme At the time Gilbert wrote this ( 1972 ) the word `gay ` just meant happy - nothing more. It was used that way for decades in the English language . It was a few years later that ` gay ` was given a whole new meaning and the original meaning is almost forgotten !

  • @ChocolatecakeMac A cover version is when someonle else records it - this is unmistakably the voice of Gilbert O`Sullivan . I hope this isn`t too technical for you to understand .

  • the early seventies were wonderfully innocent, and then 20 years on..more &bitter-sweet times...this song was apt for both.Unsurpassable bless

  • "Couldn't understand why the only man

She had ever loved had been taken

    Leaving her to start

With a heart so badly broken"

These words still break my heart too bad, I still remember my mother's face when my dad died.

  • GILBERT FANS ! - Anyone wishing to send a personal message to CLAIR HERSELF please see the video opposite - `The sweetest Clair video ever ! ` - SHE WILL SEE IT !
