It is essential to warm up then build up to weights. It's perfectly safe. Try jump squats too:-)

it's not too much, i never had any knee troubles training like this for several years. but i trained explosiveness only twice a week and made sure my form was solid. also, before starting anything with loading, i did a few weeks of prep work with bodyweight only -- no dumbbells.
