Bert acknowleded the influence of Jackson C Frank whilst being the best guitarist -song writer i have had the privilage to see and hear, including the plagarist jimmy page
@Mouldytone Jackson's version WAS left alone. You can listen to it any time you wish... This is Jansch's version. It's silly to contend that an artist shouldn't make "changes" when they cover a song.
On why Bert Jansch adapted the lyrics, he changes what isa full ballad/ story into a much shorter, less specific song. Perhaps he finds this version easier to sing in his own persona, I personally find it easier to relate to than the full story found in Jackson C Frank's version, but it's just my own experience of the song.
I love Mr Jansch and have records of his from 35 years ago but I don`t know why he`d add/change lyrics from Jackson C Frank`s original version of this wonderful song unless he was just fed up with playing the same song over and over for the last 30 + years. Bert is beautiful but I really think that Jackson`s original version should be left alone.

Bert has earned the right to sing any song any way he likes. It ain't so much the song as the approach to the song that counts.

Why do they change the lyrics? the song is essentially the same, I think we call it artistic interpretation
