not too much of a bother when you climb it with a school bag while the bloke next to you hurls up a 60lbs bergen, innit.

@TrooperLFC, you are right that the "bloke" next to you does much more work than you. I prefer to haul my own gear, and go where there are fewer people, but that's not an option on Kili, you need the porters. And even with a school bag it's still a bit of a bother.
It's important to chose a good company, ideally a locally owned one, where porters get treated fairly. In a good company, they e.g. eat the same meals that you do (and you can actually verify this one once you are on the mountain).
