In 2007, I began to construct a refracting telescope using only materials that were available to Jose Rizal (1861-1896) during his time. These include bamboo, old eye glasses, rubber bands, round hooks, pine resin and candle wax. I did not use epoxy.
I documented the heavenly bodies that I've seen through this telescope through the years: the moon, Mars, Jupiter and its satellites, and Saturn. Rizal could have constructed a relatively powerful telescope if his teachers motivated him enough.
