can this be done using just a sphere in the background? or how is it typically done to composite a sky and 3d scene?

Well done good sir!
We have an assignment in school to create a simple box and then use our freshly learned photoshop skills to texture the box whichever way we like to make it look good. I decided to go with a skybox to add to another model I made for added awesomeness.
This was exactly what I was looking for! Thanks!
