@quangluu96 It's cooling a nuclear reactor that is a problem in space.
Currently most of the nuclear reactors used in space have converted heat directly to electricity, but these are extremely low-power RGTs. We don't yet have a similar solution for reactors of the kind that would be needed for something like VASIMR.

@akezf The noise you're hearing is the pump for the vacuum chamber. Sadly, the engine itself is near silent :)
-
@manulelutin ye, but no one cares if we use nuclear in space, its not gonna harm us though right?
-
@nickoswoos well our current engines basically run out of fuel after escaping the atmosphere, so this is basically the most effective propulsion method.
-
@akezf Pretty sure that's just the sound of the vacuum chamber.
-
Im sorry you are late somebody has already invented the lights..

@b1tPanther That IS how fluid dynamics work, the smaller nozzle size means the same amount has to come out faster. Squeaze the nozzel and the speed of escape increases. Go to your garden hose and try it out. You are not conserving energy only mass. Ion engines are NOT more energy efficient they are more mass efficent. They go faster because they are able to put more energy into less mass. Please read you subject matter before correcting me.

@akezf actually thats prob the vacuum pumps for the chamber lol

Bravo!!! Ya solo les falta hacerlo 1000 veces más grande para llegar a los 200 MW.
I love the noise it makes. Very fitting for the engine of a space ship.

@highlander2107 :
...and we need nuclear reactor for produce 18MW electric power. In space.
not so simple obtain this power in space.
