Not pretentious at all. Interesting. I can work out how to play most songs on guitar , even most songs by someone like Brian Wilson but when it comes to the Verlaines I'm lost.
I took some harmony classes along time ago, and some of their amazing sound comes from using the bass and guitar in contrapuntal progressions; meaning the bass and root note of the guitar go in opposite directions, which gives the song the amazing layered sound. Graeme also does know chords like crazy. Hope I didn't come across pretentious - I just love this band.

I'd say he applies the his music school training to make your average song a little more involved.
just fantastic music on all the LP's up until the Slash one in the early 90's.
