I never really heard this song before I bought The Warriors code by the Dropkick Murphys, and I gotta tell you, when I heard it, it really moved me. Many guys I know are now over seas fighting for the ol' red white n blue, and this song really helped me put things in perspective. So I went to france last summer to find this William McBride's grave, and seeing all those white crosses and gravestones as long as the eye can see, was just so overwhelming. This is such a meaningful song. R.I.P lads.

how bout we agree to disagree...this is a powerful song...and we can all agree that there were a number of Willie McBrides, Willam McBrides, and W. McBrides in WW 1.....so lets not mar this song bout hateful comments...or ones about W. McBride.... we all know now there were like 20 to 25 of em or less...

I don't think that the point of the song was "Willie McBride" of whom there were several. It's an anti-war song which uses the personal to illustrate the universal. But of course, there are people here who want to fight over which Willie the song was about, whilst the song was about all of them but none in particular. How apropo, since fighting about nothing is part of the message of the song.

Someone needs to learn some history. All of of Ireland bled in the Somme, not just Ulster.
