The Saluang is a traditional music instrument of the Minangkabau people from West Sumatra,.It is made of thin bamboo or "talang" (Schizostachyum brachycladum), with only 4 holes. The dimension of Saluang is 3-4 cm in diameter and 40-60 cm in length. It is related to the Suling of other parts of Malay archipelago.
Saluang player can play that music instrument without interrupting for taking breath from start to end of song. They have developed special breath technique in blowing that instrument without stopping for breathing in ( Mampasalisiahan Hangok).
In the aspect of Minang, Saluang is normaly accompanied by sang rhymes (Pantun). The chant usually contains satire, lamentation, advices, or jokes. If Saluang is an single instrument, it is used for magic practise or healing ceremonies.
