Director Carl Theodor Dreyer fuses fantasy and reality in this landmark tale, which ranks among cinema's greatest horror movies. Holiday reveler Allan Gray (Julian West) takes a room in an eerie European village inn and is awakened when an elderly gent lets himself in, leaving a parcel inscribed, "To be opened in the event of my death." Gray later witnesses the man's murder, opens the package and realizes a supernatural killer is on the loose.

This film seems to represent everything great about the era from which it came. Special effects are used in this film not as a way to dazzle the audience, but to communicate a powerful, dream-like trance. Dreyer's other film "The Passion of Joan of Arc" is similar in that it is able to communicate a powerful message through stunning and masterful cinematography. I suggest that viewers of this film watch other Dreyer films. In short, this films is a masterpiece. Savor it.

A master piece of sorts. The atmosphere fairly reminiscent to a feverish dream and the aspect ratio creates a sort of claustrophobic feel. The film itself is somewhat incoherent, but that sort of adds to the disorienting feel (and having a fever upon my first viewing didn't help matters either haha).

This is the last year (1932) where someone like Gunzburg would be welcome in Germany. A little fanatical, toothbrushed-moustached maniac would stop being chancellor of Germany, and become "Der Fuhrer."
You are watching actions occurring in a Democratic Germany almost bankrupt. 11:25 Are nazi soldiers to replace the gun bearing shadow in that warehouse in a few short years?

The scene of the young man being carried away in the coffin can also been seen put to music by the Brit band Massive Attack. It's an incredible combination between the music and the way we are being depicted as the man in the coffin. Chilling!
