Having problems with skunks in your garden, eating your flower bulbs and destroying your landscaping, but don't know how to safely remove them?

Skunks in your yard can truly be a hazard to you, your family and your pets. As you know, skunks are dangerous when they are afraid because they can spray a chemically potent deterrent on you and your pets. Using a skunk trap is the best option for skunk removal.

When trapping skunks, therefore, it is best to take precautions so that you are not sprayed. In this video we discuss the best way to catch and relocate your problem skunk to avoid getting sprayed.

Cover yourself with a tarp, including your feet, before approaching the cage. Also, be quiet when approaching the trap and cover the trap itself with a blanket, which makes the skunk less likely to spray. When you pick up the trap, try not to shake it or annoy the skunk inside. The next part is transporting the skunk to its new location, far from your family and yard!

The best way to do this is to put the trap in a box, which keeps the skunk's potential odor away from your car's rug, upholstery or truck bed. When you are ready to release the skunk, keep the blanket over the back half of the trap while lifting up the cage door with one hand. Once the door is open, back away to be safe; the skunk will probably be slow getting out of the trap. Try using a Havahart® skunk trap to catch and release skunks, so they stop digging in your garden!

Be safe when using skunk traps by following these helpful tips! Using skunk traps for skunk control is a safe and effective way to remove them from your property. Learn more about skunk control and using skunk traps at our website, Havahart.com.

  • @Lotusrk123 Yeah, I'd much rather drown or shoot them. I don't want them to suffer; I just want them off my property.

  • Absolutely correct in Ohio as well even for raccoons

  • In many states, including Colorado, it is illegal to release a trapped skunk. They must be killed. Popular methods are drowning or shooting. A less humane way would be to cover with a dark covered tarp and leave them in the sun for several days to die from heat stroke or thirst.
