The Forest Service is seeking public comment about developing a new direction for National Forest Land Management Planning. The official comment period will end 2/16/2010, but please read the following and take action even if that date has past.

The newly proposed Forest Planning Rule will apparently shift from multiple use management of your Forests to focus more on closing roads and trails or what they refer to as "restoration". According to the Forest Service press release "the Forest Service has identified a set of potential principles that could guide development of a new planning rule. Among these principles are an emphasis on restoration, conservation, and the improved resilience of ecosystems; watershed health; climate change response; species diversity and wildlife habitat; sustainable National Forest System lands; proactive collaboration; and working across landscapes."

We are currently facing the largest proposed closures of trails, roads, camping & public access in the history of the United States. Most people are unaware that today many National Forests are proposing to close up to 80% of the existing roads & trails. The public needs to submit comments in favor of keeping them open. Many of these trails will be closed by dropping trees on them and digging tank traps, so these trails will be closed to horse riding, hiking and all non mechanized activities as well. There are proposals to eliminate historical mountain bike, trail bike, 4x4 & other mechanized recreation access on tens of millions of acres under inappropriate Wilderness Designation.

  • Is that... a 2WD bike with a Maico motor? Sounds like a drag-race winner to me.

  • Yup, a 2WD Maico

  • man this would aslo impact the econimy less jobs in the forest less people rideing = less parts breaking = no parts being bought = bike shops will goout of bissnus i can see it happining

  • @jdirtbiker1 Yup, I talked to a guy at the gas station near the trails they said all of thier buissness was dirtbikes and quads, they said they do like I think like 4k or like 20k worth of just gas and supplies for bikes in the am alone. So affects places you wold think are unrelated to bikes. Eat places near the trails, etc.

  • also what is a tank trap?

  • @IceCreamSteve1 Link to Federal page in side bar as well.
