One by one, President Barack Obama spoke the names and told the stories Tuesday of the 13 people slain in the Fort Hood, Texas shooting rampage, honoring their memories even as he denounced the 'twisted logic' that led to their deaths. (Nov. 11)

The military is under his command, yes, but the title of "Commander in Chief" is always held by a civilian president. Since he is not a commissioned officer of the US Military he is not bound by military customs and courtesies. George Washington specifically set it up this way to avoid any semblance of military rule.

  • @AScann3rDarkly correct me if I'm wrong, but is he not the head of the military....the, oh, I don't know, Commander in Chief?

  • He doesn't really mean it.

  • I agree

  • Obama hasn't done anything that impresses me, but I'd rather have a president that needs teleprompters than a president who COULDN'T read telepromters.

  • He SHOULD be saluting our military. They sacrifice more than he does. Besides...they are suppose to salute him...he must salute them back so they can go on...just like an enlisted MUST salute an officer when in uniform and the office must salute back so the enlisted can go on and stop saluting.

  • He couldn't make a speach without the prompters. Left right, Left right. Look straight ahead for 5 minutes.

  • he couldnt-care- less- and he speaks with no emotion he is trying to deliver some JFK/ IHAVEADREAM caliber speech every time he talks and i can smell the bullshit from hear

  • Because he's technically a civilian. He saluted the army during his inauguration and General Casey quickly corrected him and he put his hand over his heart. You can look that up on youtube.

  • the sad part is is that he never did salute them...
