Don't get me wrong. Jimmie Davis sings the best version and he made the song popular. Also I wouldn't think singing through a megaphone by O.Hood was all that great. But the sentiments are his and the music is his. Afterwards he patented all his compositions but not one became a hit.
Wiki is OK I suppose but increasingly I'm seeing history politicized (not in the case of "You are my sunshine") of course but in favour of Africans, Muslims and against Christians, the West etc
This information you share is important. It would be good to have the beginnings of the song correct there. I do not know how one goes about doing that.
The song was bought for $35 by Jimmie Davis, (who made his own excellent version of it) from Paul Rice who claimed to compose it.
But it was composed by Oliver Hood a self-taught, charismatic yet humble man, one of life's gentlemen, who first sang it in oublic in La Grange, Georgia in 1933 at a VFW convention.
Hood's house was like the local centre for musicians who used to gather there or on the porch playing music
Sunshine is a simple yet very happy/sad song and David plays it well
Jimmy Davis, Oliver Hood who cares. Jimmy got credit for it so its his song. Anybody can say its theirs, but it's who gets credit that proves who owns it.
