This is the fort at the southern end of Lake Champlain, taken by Arnold and Ethan Allen with about 80 Green Mountain Boys on May 10, 1775. It was in much rougher shape then, having been partially destroyed by the retreating french army in 1759. The brits didn't do much to rebuild it, the threat of the french returning being greatly diminished through the 1760's. The modern fort as it appears today is a much more recent reconstruction. The attack on the undermanned fort at dawn took about 10 minutes, and was the first american victory after the start of hostilities at Lexington and Concord. It helped that the british stationed here didn't know the war had started.
Thanks for posting. I got to check this place out. My gr gr gr gr grandfather was a color sergeant who fought here with Ethan Allen, the Green Mountain Boys, and Benedict Arnold.
