I don't think the old guy is being fair to the show. There's a difference between what's in print and what's on screen. I think Bulgakov would like this version.

It really sounds like the older reviewer can't let go of the way the book was. Havent seen the show, but I imagine that the slapstick comedy in the 2 first episodes that goes (according to the reviewers) are to show what a bleak and terrible place he has gone to.

Very unfair review from the older reviewer here, I really liked how the older doctor was attempting to stop his younger self from going down the same road he had. It turned this into a reflective piece that was so depressing because of course he can't go back and change things, the decisions he made are the ones he is trapped by. I enjoyed this adaptation, which is exactly what it is, an adaptation.
