Starbucks and Jumba Juice, corporate giants pushing poor folks out just as they did to Blacks in Harlem, the Irish in Hells' Kitchen, the Italians in Manhattan, Puerto Ricans in the Bronx, Mexicans in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin.
The recorded opinions literally speak for themselves and I think they're rather well done (sans the interview of the Record Shop owner in part 3, a gentrify-er, who complains about gentrification). The voice-over conclusions, on the other hand, felt based on evidence not presented in this documentary. Perhaps my biggest complaint is that no one ever seems to present solutions to gentrification so the argument seems to sound a lot more like anti-change.
Great video on Austin..I've seen the change happen literally overnight. My entire block has out-of-towners remodeling their homes, and the guy across the street wants to form a neighborhood association! I've personally given up on the racist orgins of gentrification..Now,it's flat out capitalism, plain and simple. The same thing that happens to inner city happens to country folks too. Its all about money..How much too fast can they make.
@roughcoat09 if it was only mexicans... there are many poor whites getting kicked out too!!!
plus most of the mexicans in austin are old generation americans, meaning mexicans that go as far back as when texas was a mexican state!!! that's how long they've been there!
@roughcoat09 You'd be surprised how many of those older Austin/SA/Houston/etc hispanic families have been here for more than 5 generations. Dumbass. Fucking uncultured, sheltered dickheads defending manifest destiny
