Saint John Passion

Commissioned in 1996 by Msgr. Lawrence O'Leary, pastor of St. Martin of Tours Church in West Los Angeles. This performance is from the Good Friday service, April 21, 2000. Score shows most clearly at 720 HD in "Large Player." The printed score will be made available soon.

The following statement reflects the attempt to reduce the animosity that the St. John text has historically incited: From the guidelines of the 1974 Vatican Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews: "With regard to liturgical readings, care will be taken to see that homilies based on them will not distort their meaning, especially when it is a question of passages which seem to show the Jewish people as such in an unfavorable light. Efforts will be made so to instruct the Christian people that they will understand the meaning for the contemporary believer."
