Adoption of "Romane", Baby Eurasian Black Vulture @ Antwerp Zoo | May 2000

Eurasian Black Vultures are a large, long-lived and monogamous raptor species of conservation concern. They go by the scientific name "Aegypius monachus" and are also known as Cinereous Vultures.
With less than 10.000 pairs worldwide and even less than 2.000 in Europe this beautiful species is considered 'near threatened' at global and 'vulnerable' at European level (BirdLife International 1996, 2008). As a consequence, there are huge international endeavors aiming at breeding the Eurasian Black Vultures in captivity and reintroducing their offspring into former natural habitats.

This video is showing little "Romane", an at that time 3 days young Eurasian Black Vulture chicken, and her adoptive parents. Hatching in Parc des Oiseaux in Villars-les-Dombes in late May 2000, Romane is a native French. Still in her egg, she was removed for artificial incubation from her biological parents - a wild born couple with bad record in raising youngs. Soon after hatching she was then transferred to Antwerp Zoo, Belgium. Here she was adopted and successfully raised by a local pair of Eurasian Black Vultures which sadly lost their egg shortly before Romane's arrival. The couple was one of the first pairs of this species breeding in captivity ever, their first son hatched in 1981.
In early August 2000, Romane was released into the wild in the Cevennes, France, at the age of 79 days.
