Carelia was famous for its professional lament singers, men and women who knew long laments, songs and epical verses by heart. In 1920 The Kalevala Society (Kalevala Seura) still found wise men and women who also could perform magical rituals. This video is a compilation of magical rituals found in "Reenactment of a Carelian Wedding" shot on location in 1920.

  • oh wow i love finding now and different music this right down my ally. May your gods bless you for though talent.

  • That's definitely Sami joiker Wimme Saari joiking on that track, but Baltic-Finnic Viena Karelians also did a type of joik (check out Karoliina Kantelinen's video on YouTube), and other Finns and Baltic-Finnic peoples performed vocable chants during rituals, too. I like the cross-cultural, postmodern, neo-folk Hedningarna piece used, but I agree a Karelian tune--or simply the original audio track would be great.

Thanks so much for posting this video, Ishexan!

  • @Vojak3 I don’t think that there is some carelian nationalist movement. What I speak of is more spirituality way, before we spoke so many different languages. We live a world that war is a good thing. That some people thinks god exists. We need more understanding and stop this nonsense. We need open our hearts and seek our own path in life. Even some people can have a different option than me, which makes us very unique.

  • @StatosThaMan Is there any carelian nationalist movement?

  • @Vojak3 I dont recon. I'm a carelian and one thrid of finnish (if you count my mom half finnish and half carelian and my dad as a carelian) and I feel the sprits of my ancestors thorugh. Specially my granddad, who died four years before I was born, but Im talkin with them all the time. Even their are not here, so I choose a path of godness, that make my unqiue in many ways.

  • @StatosThaMan Today there are not many Karelians and even those are othodox christians. They are dying. :(

  • @Vojak3 there were orthodox christians, but I saw pictures from the old country that they keep the totum poles and fire place to honor the gods. Carelian was very close to the nature and they have alot of shaman in their community. Christians try to convert carelians to christiany, but they just blend with orthodox.

  • Where the Karelians at this time already orthodox christians?

  • Fantastic video! LOVE the music!!! If you could send me the link where to download/find some more.. I would be very grateful!

  • awesome upload - thank you!!
