Sorry about the wobbly camera. You can hear the excitement from the small crowd that gathered at this spot. The Tornado A1 Peppercorn class engine 60163 speeds up Stormy Bank at Pyle, towards Bridgend, hauling the 'Towy Tornado' excursion from Carmarthen to Bristol, on Saturday 25 July 2009. Filmed from the old GWR iron bridge near the Crown Inn, site of the original Pyle Station. The second station (demolished in the mid sixties) was beyond the stone road bridge that you see in the closing shot. The current, third, station (opened 1995) is down the line of the opening shots, just visible, and a number of people gathered there to see this train. Preserved steam locomotives usually creak and wheeze a bit up this incline. In the days of steam, heavy goods trains needed a push from a 'banking' engine. In the 1970 and 80s, the British Steel iron ore trains needed THREE diesel locomotives to get up here. As you can see, this newly built Peppercorn runs as smooth as a sewing machine.
