Scientists use data to create models of solar storms -- violent, dangerous, and more powerful than anything on Earth.

  • 90% of the earth's magnetic field is created through the Earth's core through the combination of the Earths rotation and that creates the convection of the Earth's liquid Iron core. Also called the dynamo affect, the suns power does nothing but create solar flares that pass OVER our magnetic field, which protects use from the harmful radiation contained in the suns flares.

  • That's some awesome power. But I'm sure Earth will be fine for at least another 5 billion years

  • @A1dan0Neill Late response, but that's why they say it's the "end of civilzation as we know it" if that happens, but say it wouldn't affect us if we were the same lifestyle as from the 1700's. lol

Though, if it IS ever strong enough to come and actually slap the earth, being fire in general, we'd be screwed. No where to run, to hide, to fly. I don't really picture that happening, but anything's possible. Truth is, we don't know for sure what's going to happen until the focussed time passes.

  • @throatoysters Of course. But if we will ?

  • If a sufficiently strong Solar Storm where heading our way, the only thing you could do would be to unplug your appliances. If your electronics are radiation hardened, you don't even have to do that. However, the most likely result would be ala Quebec in March, 1989, where they lost power, but no appliances where fried as the Transformers and Substations stopped the power surge.

  • Actually, for the most part, nothing will happen. The sun ejects 6 CME's a year. The strongest one to ever hit the earth, the one that did so in the 1850's, was around 200 nanoTeslas. When it impacts the Geomagnetic Field, the vast majority of the energy (spread out over millions and millions of square miles) is brushed off like dust across your coat. If one around 190-300 nanoTeslas where to hit, you would lose power, possibly for the next ten years, but the earth wouldn't blow up.

  • Do Solar Storms descriminate? In other words are there certain appliances which either because of their electro-magnetic sensitivity or frequency of operation may be more vulnerable under Solar Storm conditions?

  • Here we go again. Predicting the future.

  • oooh! this is the basis for the nicholas cage movie "Knowing"....the eruption occurs during an eclipse, and when the eclipse is passed...well you'll have to see it for yourself what happens when energy equal to a billion atom bombs hit earth :-)

  • you serbs...

  • you sound retarded ?

  • you, Aussies...
