Nimi Places allows to show and organize chosen folders, network shares or even some devices on the desktop in special boxes. Those are using Nimi Nici file display component offering such features like smooth scrolling, dynamic item scaling, own image thumbnailing and more. Places can be either pined to desktop or staying always on top, also can be set individually to turn transparent when inactive or for example hide when desktop is not focused.
